Week 4 - Etching and printing
This week we continued working with the collage characters (though we could create new ones). We did drypoint printing, which I've done before, but I've only ever done it with foil and also lino carving.
The way the parts of characters mixed was definitely interesting and more often than not had very weird results.
Here is a sketch of my character, from which I only got the legs in the end.
I ended up with this long necked thing with very nice legs.
I felt like the rest of the body was a bit too casual compared to the legs so I dressed him up, gave him a rose, some bows and a pair of arms to hold his wine glass.
Week3 Homework - Collage characters
These are the 3 members of tribe based on my character from last lesson. They are the "Man-eating plants with fishnet tights" tribe. I didn't like all parts of the character, but I took what I liked and made...these. I like how they seem like they might be dancing to All the single Ladies while cooking the dinner.
Week 3 - collage
This week we did collages. My collage has kind of minimalist look to it which is unusual for me. It's actually a joke about one town in Slovakia - Vrutky. I found a train ticket to Vrutky and knew immediately I wanted to do something with that. It's hard to explain to someone who's never experienced Vrutky, but it's a very weird place. The popular theory is that nothing besides the train station is actually real and sometimes trains that are supposed to arrive just don't. And no matter how late your train is, if you're changing trains in Vrutky there's no way you won't catch the train. Like I said, to understand Vrutky you have to experience Vrutky.
For our second task we had to create a character. This is not exactly what I had in mind, but it was fun anyway. I wanted her to have a long flower dress, but I couldn't find enough suitable flowers. She's a giant man-eating flower queen. Even though I don't usually do collages I had a lot of fun with them.
Week 2 - sketchbooks
When I found out we were doing sketchbooks I was very happy because I'm a crafty person and very much into everything DIY. I've made my own sketchbook before but all these techniques were new to me. I don't usually draw on coloured paper but since I've already used it to make these sketchbooks I might as well try it.
Week 1 - Phobia cut-out
In the first class we each picked a paper with phobia on it and then we had to make a paper cut-out depicting the phobia. I got Wiccaphobia which is a fear of witches and witchcraft. I've decided to make a witch towering over a bubbling cauldron and a cat sitting on her back. I've never done a paper cut-out before and I'm not very good with scissors and knives, especially when it comes to being accurate but this actually turned out pretty good.
